EMILY CAN BE ON THE WALLS IN Dishonored 2Time: Sep. 7, 2017 From: SCDKeyAt QuakeCon last week, I met with Dishonored's creative director, Harvey Smith, to talk about Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and the series as a whole.
After discussing Billie Lurk's new skills in the next game (you can see in the video below), I asked Smith if there was any crazy skill he had tried that ended up on the Dining Floor. Smith showed they had planned early development, Emily Kaldwin the power to withdraw.
"On Dishonored 2, we talked about letting Emily go to walls and blankets," Smith said, "but our version of it would literally change the way gravity works."
Smith said the skill would turn Emily into a 2D shadow that could stick to the walls. Objects behave normally until they interact with them, then follow their own rules of gravity. "Everything that drowned her would be a minute, and normal gravity would be if she were far enough away," Smith said.
But the Wall-Wanderidee was cut because of the technical challenge. "Previously, technical director Hugues Tardif was like 'Dude, I've been working on a game that has done it before and is reliable, do not leave us.
Smith continued to try to balance his efforts. They could have done the skill, but would have taken too much time and worked with other things. "As a result, you'll lose tons of s**t," Smith said. "So if you made a game where it was the only force, you can do it right, but the time to refine it, fix it and fix the errors and everything is so much."
