With the next big update for Windows 10, version 1803, Microsoft makes big changes in marketing software for OEMs. Windows 10 S - the limited version of Windows that can only run applications from the store - disappears.
Currently, Windows 10 S is a single version of Windows 10. It is based on Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM CD-KEY GLOBAL. In addition to blocking downloaded programs, Windows 10 S also prevents the use of some built-in Windows functions, such as the command line, PowerShell and the Windows subsystem for Linux.
Brad Sams of Thurrott.com writes that the changes for Windows 10 version 1803. According to the disclosed documents provided to Microsoft partners with the 1803 version, Windows 10 S will be a mode of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 Pro, instead of a standalone version.
This repositioning of S as a mode instead of a version makes sense. However, how the details work in practice is not immediately clear. The current Windows 10 Pro can not be restored to Windows 10 S without a full reinstall. This means that it is not possible to switch to the unlocked operating system for troubleshooting or installing a single controller, and then return to the more secure locked mode for normal operation. This makes 10S less attractive for children's PCs.
